April 5,
2014,
10AM:
Oahu Coconut Island Private Tour
with BBQ, for all Cornell Alumni and children
above the age of 5:
Please sign up here: https://coconutislandcornell.eventbrite.com
Moku o Lo'e or Coconut Island is a small island in Kāne'ohe Bay
with a storied history. Made famous by the opening scene
from Gilligan's Island, Moku o Lo'e was initially a quiet,
12-acre island utilized mostly by fishermen. Through the past
century, it has grown to 28 acres in size, and has variously
been a tuna-packing plant, a playground for the rich and famous,
a respite for World War II soldiers, and now a world-famous
marine research lab.
This tour of Coconut Island for Cornell Alumni and friends will
include a boat ride to beautiful Moku o Lo’e island, and a
guided discovery of the island’s fascinating natural and human
history. The tour will also include stops at the shark
ponds, touch tanks, and other island hot spots to learn about
some of the current Hawai'i Institute of Marine Biology (HIMB)
research, and the animals that can be found just offshore on our
Hawaiian coral reefs.
Following the tour, there will be a Cornell Alumni luncheon from
12pm-2pm at the Beachhouse overlooking Kāne'ohe Bay before
heading back to the Lilipuna pier.
For more information about Coconut Island and HIMB, please visit
their website here: http://hawaii.edu/himb/
