Oral English Instructor Position

Position opening in April 1999 for a full-time English instructor of oral communication at Sapporo Gakuin University. B.A. in an appropriate field and native-speaker fluency in English necessary. Some experience in teaching at Japanese universities desirable.

Teaching load will include 10 ninety minute classes per week (some possibly in evenings) plus limited administrative duties (advising on curriculum matters). One year contract offered, renewable for a maximum of three years.

For more information, please contact Mr. Tim Grose, Department of English at <grose@sgu.ac.jp> or 011-386-8111 as soon as possible. In Japanese, you may also contact Ms. Shirotori in the Kyomuka (Educational Affairs Dept.) at the same telephone number.

Deadline for submission of all application materials will be November 30th.

Comments: The courseload is heavy, especially since Japanese academics generally have around six courses maximum, and in evenings to boot. This is despite a one-year contract, which in Japan are generally given only to part-timers who teach a class or two a week. Moreover, these contracts capped at three years total go against Ministry of Education preferences, and are unusually short even for Japanese universities.
